Alexa Algios, PsyD
Dr. Alexa Algios is a licensed psychologist. She completed her doctoral training at Pace University in the School-Clinical Child PsyD program and is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA). During her five- year doctoral training, Dr. Algios had an opportunity to train in a variety of settings where she provided individual, group, and family therapy. Her training has focused on working with children, adolescents, and young adults with a wide range of clinical presentations, such as anxiety, depression, complex trauma, attachment difficulties, and disruptive behavior.
Dr. Algios’ clinical training experiences have taken place in a psychiatric inpatient unit, a public elementary school, and a foster care agency. Her work on the child and adolescent psychiatric inpatient unit at Kings County Hospital provided her experience working with adolescents who required intensive in-patient treatment. During her work at King’s County, she conducted psychological evaluations and co-led interpersonally-oriented and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-oriented groups.
During her work in the elementary school setting, she provided individual counseling, conducted psychological evaluations for triennial re-evaluations, and co-led group counseling for children of divorced parents as well as social skills groups. Dr. Algios also consulted with teachers about behavioral challenges exhibited by children and provided behavior plans for better classroom management. Dr. Algios also has previous experience with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) when working as a teacher’s assistance at a charter school that specialized in working with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Dr. Algios has continued to work with children on the Autism spectrum in the clinical setting and integrates ABA principals into the therapy to more effectively work with this population of youth.
Working in a foster care setting allowed for clinical training with children, adolescents, and young adults who had histories of complex trauma and attachment difficulties. In addition to providing therapy during this training experience, Dr. Algios conducted comprehensive psychological evaluations for foster care youth to determine their level of functioning and make specific academic and clinical recommendations. Helping children in the foster care system required close collaboration with caseworkers, nurses, and psychiatrists. The collaboration with those who work and interact closely with the child is an important component of Dr. Algios’ work with children and adolescents.
Dr. Algios is joining Interactive Discovery after completing her doctoral internship program at The Guidance Center in Long Beach, CA, which is a community mental health agency. At the agency she worked with a diverse population of youth and provided individual therapy, play therapy, family therapy, and parent consultation. Additionally, she conducted comprehensive psychological evaluations in order to clarify diagnostic presentations and help inform treatment.
Dr. Algios has an integrated approach towards therapeutic intervention and utilizes psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and attachment-based techniques. She believes in the importance of providing treatment that will best meet the needs of the individual and their family.
